Today was the day of the "mixer," and Macie was really nervous. Her messenger bag was slung over her shoulder with her newly-fashioned supersuit tucked inside. A lot of the people were going to have professionally ordered supersuits, weren't they? She'd look like some kid going Trick-Or-Treating who got lost! Her hands shook a little, and she brushed some of her curly hair back. She took a deep breath and stepped out onto the street. It was a block to the metro station which would bring her down Broadway. Then she'd have to walk three more blocks to the building that held the HQ of SAG.
After making sure she was headed in the right direction, she tucked her phone into the bag. Her hands grasped the strap, and she started walking down the street. Around her, the buildings soared into the sky. Some were "short", only four or five stories, and looked older, made of bricks or brownstone. Others towered several stories high, made out of less-decorative brick or glittering steel. Macie couldn't help but stare. It was so very different from Albuquerque, where almost all the buildings were one story, little brown cookie-cutter boxes. And the people. She saw more black, Asian, Middle Eastern people than she'd ever seen before, heard languages she couldn't place. People bumped into her without saying excuse me or even glancing at her.
She was relieved when she reached the metro, where the traffic was somewhat more controlled. The stairs were small and steep, and she felt like they went down forever. Hot air blew up towards her as she descended. At the turnstile, Macie swiped her newly-purchased subway pass, and went through. It took some wandering around the levels to find where her subway was. Then she realized she'd gotten there with ten minutes to spare. There was a seat free, and her legs already ached, but she noticed a thin layer of black grime on it and decided to stand.
Eventually, she reached the building, and looked at its impressively reflective exterior. Macie stepped forward, then stopped. Finally, she took a deep breath and reached for the door handle.
