practice makes improvement

As time went on, Macie was shocked to discover that she went from dead on her feet to actually starting to need less sleep.  She was still exhausted between school and training, but it was really improving.  Actually, so was she.  She could do more of the exercises White Wind wanted her to do, and she was excited about her progress in hand-to-hand.
This Saturday, they were practicing.  White Wind kicked out to knock Macie's feet from under her, and Macie jumped out of the way.  She struck at White Wind, who blocked and twisted her arm behind her.  Macie twisted into White Wind's grasp, trying to flip her over her.  White Wind didn't budge, so Macie jerked her head into White Wind's.  Her grasp loosened and Macie jerked away.  In response, White Wind lashed out with a jet of wind.  It caught Macie in the chest, knocking her backwards, but she used her flight to flip and readjust.  She flew towards White Wind, trying to use her weight and momentum to knock White Wind down.  White Wind brought her arm square against Macie's chest, following with her whole body.  She knocked and pinned Macie to the ground.
Then White Wind stood and held her hand out, helping Macie up.  "Nice job," she complimented Macie.
Macie grinned, trying to hide the fact that her eyes were watering from the sting.  "Thanks.  I just can't believe- I mean, remember what it was like when I started?  I could hardly do anything."
White Wind smiled back.  "Yup, you've come a long way.  Look, I think you're ready for some real fieldwork."
Macie didn't know whether to be excited or terrified.  "But- okay."
"Meet me back here at, say," she checked the clock on the wall, "10:00?"  Macie nodded, feeling really nervous.
