Inside was a dark landing. Directly ahead, stairs rose into shadow, and to the right, she could just see the beginning of a hall. As she watched, someone bustled out of the hall in an apron to dump what smelled like food trash into the dumpster by the door. Macie narrowly managed to fly up above the door before the young man saw her. It was lucky that he was preoccupied with balancing the trash bags. If there was a restaurant open down that hall, she doubted it was where White Wind had gone, so she ducked inside and, before the young man entered, crept up the dark stairs.
Down the hall, light poured out from under a door. Macie could hear faint voices, and snuck closer to the door. Cautiously, she pressed her ear to the wall to see if she could hear better. Two voices came into hearing.
"I told you, it'll work."
"I've just gotta bad feeling about this."
"Does that mean you're out?" The voice became sinister.
"What do you think?"
"Look, we just go in, get what we came for, and-"
"And get arrested."
"That's why-"
Macie's vantage point for hearing ended as a hand covered her mouth, a strong arm wrapping around her.
